The JapanLab project aims to provide a template to integrate Digital Humanities and game-based assignments across a range of classes. Here we recommend a range of assignments for classes in Japanese Studies.

  • Timelines

Students are very familiar with old-fashioned timelines in textbooks. Digital timeline tools such as ClioVis offer an innovative way to conceptualize both individual events but also connections between events.

  • Video Games

A range of exciting new platforms allow students with no specialized training to design their own games or video game chapters. Explore some assignments here.

  • Virtual Heritage

Virtual heritage is a growing field that uses both image- and text-based historical evidence to recreate historical scenes, cityscapes, and/or objects in a virtual space.

  • Social Media

While the impact of social media is a complex topic, tools like twitter and other platforms can be incredibly effective in broadcasting pioneering research and scholarship.

  • Maps

Digital mapping allows students to visualize historical developments across space. They also provide valuable assignments for any class.

  • Podcasts

Podcasts are both popular and highly effective in engaging the general public with a wide range of historical topics. Learn how your students can develop their own podcast episodes for class here.

  • Videos

Videos provide a powerful tool for the presentation of groundbreaking scholarship. Student-created videos can also be highly effective tools for learning.

  • Boardgames

Board game assignments are a valuable tool for educators to meet diverse learning styles within the classroom. Designing board games requires students to gain content knowledge of a specific subject but challenges them to go beyond mere facts and utilize critical thinking.

This guide was developed by Haley Price in 2022 with support from Adam Clulow and Kirsten Cather. It was supplemented by a boardgames assignment by Emily Cole in 2026.
